Before Improvements

In the 1950’s, expanding auto/truck traffic led to the construction of new bridges and creation of the Broad and East Front Street major traffic corridors. The widening of Broad Street transformed the tree-lined street of fine residences into a noisy, psychological barrier between the downtown and residential areas.

With the construction of the new Neuse River Bridge and removal of John Lawson Bridge at the end of Broad Street, development of the 2000 Urban Design Plan provided the opportunity to recommend major improvements to the Broad Street gateway corridor. A transportation analysis and traffic studies concluded it was feasible to narrow Broad Street and create a median strip to enhance its appearance and make it safer for pedestrian crossings.

After Improvements (Projected)

NC DOT is funding the 1.5 miles of major streetscape improvements currently under construction. Underground utilities, landscaping, lights and trees is funded by the City of New Bern. When the Broad Street improvements and new Trent River Bridge are completed (November 2009), the City will take ownership of Broad Street (from First Street), East Front Street and the new bridge. NC DOT will redirect traffic to state roads and Broad and East Front Street will no longer be a thoroughfare for highway traffic en-route to other destinations.
